I have an Autolite 4300 series carburator on my 390 Gt motor in my 67 cyclone. I am expecting a rebuild kit tomorrow and I just wondered if these carbs were known more for their power, or for economy, or for being a pain in the ass. I don't know anything about this carburator other than what I've read, and I wondered if you guys thought it was a good carburator for power, or for economy, or for a door stop. Thanks for any opinons or info you could give me.Cyclone Joe1967 Mercury Cyclone GT convertable, one of 431 made. With GT 390, C-6, 9 inch, open diff. Known for many problems, decent fuel econmy, and low performance. Its a pice of junk for anything other then an orginal car that you want to keep orginal.Pony carbs has made moderate improvements with these carbs.1966 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible with 4 wheel manual drum brakes, 352 Cubic Inch Ford Edsel V8, 600 CFM Autolite 4100 4v Carb, Cruise-O-Matic FX 3 speed automatic transmisson, Ford Nine Inch with 3:1 ratio, and dual Trush Turbo flow Glass packs.
Mechanicaly its mostly a factory orginal car.Ed Jenkins. Here is a reprint of a post I made to Ed's carb forum. BTW, I did install the 4100 and had the same old bog. I changed the booster cluster to one from my 1973 2100 and that helped a lot. I was able to tune it in pretty well, but it had idle problems and I just got tired of deaing with it. The Edelbrock is back on, working great, and I plan to make a swap to a Holley as soon as I build one up. I have an early 4776 that should work fine.
Anyway, you can't trust Pony to do anything it claims, with the exception of making the carb look nice.I sent a carb to Pony a few years ago. Autolite 4100 1.18.
The Autolite 4300D four-barrel carburetor is one sick puppy. The engineers must all have been drunk the day they put that one together but it can be corrected. Drop the main jets from.063' to.062'. Always see your Ford part dealer. Pull out the economizer valve and add a 1/32 ' shim to the one already there.
I included a list of all the things I did to the engine such as.030' over 302, stock 68-style Badger pistons, Edelbrock Performer intake and cam, Pertronix, D0OE Windsor heads and Windsor exhaust manifolds, duals.I said I would be using an electric choke, so don't add a new choke cap.I sent a carb with a bad bog.I received a great looking carb with a bad bog. With a new choke cap.I called and spoke with Jon.
Or rather, I talked and Jon ignored me and answered his own unspoken questions and recited stuff of no relevance. He objected to the intake. He objected to silicone. He objected to engine mods.
Previous to this I had always built my own carbs and usually used modified Holleys on my various engines. I had used a Holley 4010 on the Edelbrock (An experiment. Bad carb), and used a 1/4' steel plate spacer to seal the voluminous vacuum passages under it and the Autolite. But Jon would not take the two minutes it takes to zero in on the abilities of a caller, he just talks at you.
(Being a guitar amp tech and having spent a lot of time on the phone with folks asking about various amps, I know how to judge an individuals abilities and I deal with their problems accordingly. No asshole I.
Well, not all the time anyway). Anyway, he could not ignore the fact forever that they had not fixed the carb, so I sent it back.It returned with the same bog! Look, a 9.5 power valve would have taken care of it. A review of the engines parts would suggest that to them. I know that my letter that accompanied the carb was ignored, I just wanted them to fess up to it. I just got a handful of more BS from Jon ('Ran great on our 429 test engine'.
'Does your 429 test engine have Edelbrock Performer parts and is it pushing a Cougar, ass wipe?' ) No, I never got nasty.
Like a dick I just gave up.I wrote the above in a Usenet post some few years ago. Recently, I decided I should try the Autolite on the Cougar, and I should take a good look at it and change the jets, since I have acquired a few of the larger Ford jets. I opened the carb, and man, oh man, the fun started. The floats were not adjusted.
They were about 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch off of the bottom. No wonder I had a bog; the fuel level was too low to allow proper metering of mixing! Well, I pulled the floats and removed the jets. What is this!? Pony had bushed the jet mounting threads, and the bushing intrudes greatly into the well underneath. What is worse, one side extends lower than the other!
Its the same on the secondary side as well. I remember Jon saying that you cant bush the mountings and use Holley jets because it messes with the fuel flow. But, here he is bushing the hell out of the things anyway! If this is what passes for good and OK, then a better bushing that allows a Holley jet would work with no problems whatsoever.Well, I reset the floats, installed larger jets, and when I get an electric choke cap, Ill put it on and report back. Look, just dont be sending any money to Pony.
Sure, if you want a real nice looking resto, go ahead, I guess. Just be aware that you will have to go through the carb when you get it back. And that sucks! Since I didn't have my own core, had a new Edelbrock 750 that had many probs with, so I used their core.Well, bolted that on and have nothing but good things to say about it. It's not on an FE but a 73 Mach I Cleveland.
Guess time will tell but I'm happy with mine. I fought the Edelbrock for too long. Was ready to park the thing!Just throwing in my $.02 worth.
